Lagich is a small but very picturesque village in the Ismayilli region of Azerbaijan. The town is a historical and cultural reserve, which is included in one of the most popular tourist routes – the Great Silk Road. Lahic is one of the most famous Caucasian trade and craft centers, which is famous for the manufacture of various copper utensils decorated with engraved oriental ornaments, as well as the manufacture of hand-made cold weapons.
The origin of Lahic is told by ancient legends. According to one of them Persian Shah Kay-Khosrov killed the ruler of one of the cities. Fleeing revenge, he took refuge in the mountains near the modern Lahic, where he spent the rest of his life. The servants and the proxies moved closer to the Shah, establishing here a small settlement, which eventually grew.
There is an opinion that the inhabitants of Lahic learned to smelt iron and copper in the Persian city of Hamadan. In their native city, local masters managed to develop the manufacture of copper utensils and establish trade, turning Lahic into a craft center. Throughout the town there were many workshops and smelting ovens. Every day caravans passed through Lagich, bringing bread, cloth, copper and other goods. To Armenia, Georgia, Dagestan, Persia and Turkey from here were taken out the most beautiful copper utensils and cold steel. Over time, Lagich has grown and turned into a large village with white-stone streets, two- and even three-story houses, public baths, sewerage and running water.
In 1980, Lagich was declared an important historical and cultural reserve of Azerbaijan. In the village to this day, the best traditions of local craftsmanship are maintained and developed. Lahic is built on the principle of quarterly construction, it is a unique monument of medieval architecture.Cobbled streets and squares of the town, neat little houses, inimitable oriental color, an abundance of shops with a lot of handicrafts – these features of Lagich attract the attention of many tourists. It is interesting that the sewer system of the town operates today, although it was built 1000 years ago. Another craft that the ancient Lahic was famous for was the embossing of leather. “Zavaro” is one of the quarters of the village where the tanners lived and worked. Products made of morocco leather, produced by local craftsmen, were considered one of the most exquisite in the Transcaucasus. Lahich tanners skillfully processed shagreen, yuft, morocco. All sorts of things were made of leather: belts, shoes, leather jackets, bridles, book bindings. Skills of production and sales of handicrafts created favorable conditions for the development of weaving and carpet weaving in Lahic.
Lahic has a phenomenally beautiful scenic nature. It is an amazing land with fast mountain rivers, steep cliffs, deep canyons, amazing with its unprecedented beauty. To reach Lahic, you need to drive along a mountain road that fascinates with an indescribable panorama.
An interesting detail is the seven-figure of all the buildings erected in Lahic. From the time immemorial there were 7 mosques, 7 springs and 7 quarters.Lagich is surrounded by a mountain range of 7 peaks. Local residents call them the common name, Niall. Lagich with its extraordinary rich history is one of the pilgrimage centers of tourists coming from different parts of the world.
