Shemakha is one of the developed tourist regions of Azerbaijan. Shemakha is the city that tops the ranking of the most ancient cities of Azerbaijan and is located 800 meters above sea level. The excavations made here prove that the first settlements here settled more than 2,5 thousand years ago. The Mongol-Tatar raids of 1222 became destructive for this city. The main decoration of the city are historical and architectural monuments. These monuments include the Mausoleums of Pirmardakan and Shahihandan, the ruins of the fortress of Gyulistan. Another attraction of Shemakha is the complex Yeddi Gumbez (“Seven domes”), located in an ancient cemetery, among blackened from time gravestones with Arabic script, some of which are already for a thousand years. The monument is called so by the number of mausoleums-tombs of Shirvan rulers erected here in the XVIII-XIX centuries.

The most popular place for pilgrimage of tourists is located in 22 km about the district center at an altitude of 1400 m in the village of Pirkuli. There are all conditions for skiing in winter and riding in summer. In the popular picturesque place called “Gyrh-Bulag” (“Forty Springs” ) a lot of springs. There is a reserve “Pirkuli”, the territory of which is 1521 hectares. The largest observatory in Azerbaijan and throughout the Caucasus is also in the village of Pirkuli.
